University of the West Indies

Listed among the top 5 universities worldwide

In 1948 the University of the West Indies (UWI) began as a branch for the University College of London, with 33 medical students from across the Caribbean. UWI is one of two regional universities in the world, set up to serve 17 Caribbean territories, with Mona campus as its headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica. The other campuses are based in Barbados (1963), Trinidad & Tobago (1960), Antigua & Barbuda (2019).

Prior to the start of UWI, the Mona campus was known during World War ll as the Gibraltar Camp, for it housed evacuees from Gibraltar at the tip of Spain. The camp later had Jewish refugees who were marooned in Spain and Portugal. There was even a civilian internment camp on the site in 1943.

Since 2018, UWI has earned a place among the top 600 universities in the world, the top 40 in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in the top 100 Golden Age University Rankings and Impact Rankings in 2020. Besides being in the top 5%, it is among the most globalized university with nine university centres in Canada, China, Cuba, Columbia, Nigeria, UK, and USA. https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/university-west-indies#

The university’s mission is to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world. To this end UWI plays a pivotal role in research and activism on current issues, including climate action and SDG impact, COVID-19, reparatory justice, innovation and entrepreneurship.

UWI has produced students who have excelled in several disciplines, including the arts and sciences, business, politics, and sports. Notable alumni and faculty include 4 Nobel Laureates, 72 Rhodes Scholars, 3 Gates Cambridge Scholarship winners, 1 Emmy award winner, 1 Man Booker Prize winner, 1 American Book Awards winner, 18 current or former Caribbean Heads of Government, an Olympic medallist and other award winners.

Today there are fourteen other universities in Jamaica, all no doubt, aiming to match UWI’s achievements.
