Tropical Fruits

A quick introduction to fruits in Jamaica

If you wish to make a tropical fruit salad Migros and Coop supermarkets fruit section have a reasonable collection of fruits on offer, such as bananas, pineapples, oranges, grapefruits, mangos, water melons and limes.

Most are available all year-round and have become part of our regular diet. In tropical environments fruits have stronger flavours, whether sweet, tart, sour or a combination of all.  This is because fruits are generally harvested when ripe, having received maximum exposure to the sun.

Those brought to Switzerland from tropical countries are harvested while green or not fully ripe, as a result the flavours are often milder.  This difference is more distinct with some fruits, mangos a case in point.

In Jamaica seasons are associated with fruits, for example January to March is known as tamarind season and summer months, mango season.

Here is a list of fruits that you must try, but there is a chance that they may not be in season.

Thankfully food producers are making a variety of tropical fruit products, such as juices, jams and jellies for the off seasons, yet there is nothing like eating the fruit.

So, when you are in Jamaica here is a list of those exotic fruits to try -  cherry, guava, guinep, June plum, naseberry, otaheite apple, sugar cane, soursop, star apple, sweetsop, and tamarind.
