A heritage tour in Clarendon

The Parish of Clarendon

A Heritage Tour of Clarendon

In the parish of Clarendon, the Jamaican National Heritage Trust has given several locations the title of heritage sites because of their significance to the island’s heritage or culture.  Rent a car or a tour bus and spend a day visiting these sites.

Don’t be surprised if they show signs of wear and tear, since most of these locations are actively used. Yet despite their unglamorous appearance they represent significant markers in the country’s history and culture.

Start in May Pen, the parish’s main town and see the Clock Tower, which is a physical testament to the sacrifice of Jamaican soldiers in World War I. See the inscription on the western side of the tower by the British Secretary of State to the Colonies in 1918.

As you leave the town, pay a quick visit to St. Peter’s Church in Vere which was built in 1847 on the Montpelier Estate. The foundations of the church were laid on the scene of a noted slave uprising.

Ever heard of Claude McKay a well-known African-American writer?  He was actually born in Jamaica and you can visit his birthplace in a district called Sunny Ville. McKay migrated to the United States where he became a leading writer during the Harlem Negro Renaissance.

Armed with your bathing suit, visit Milk River Bath Spa where the radioactive mineral waters are said to rival other world class mineral baths.  Nearby at Alligator Hole you will see shy manatees in their natural habitat.

Finally, go Portland Point where the island’s tallest Light House is located and flashes white light every 15 seconds.  If time allows, relax by one of the pristine beaches not far from the light house.
