Gene Pearson Sculptor
Last year I finally plucked up the courage to invite Gene Pearson to exhibit his artworks at Expérience Jamaïque gallery. I was struck by his graciousness and humility. He accepted my offer, but sadly he suddenly passed away a few days ago. Jamaica’s art community mourns the loss of a great artist. During his exemplary career he taught at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts, a leading Caribbean institution for visual art. His international exhibitions included prestigious venues like UC Berkley in California, as well as, the Victoria and Albert museum in London. In addition to Pearson’s sculptures joining art collections of well-known personalities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stevie Wonder, the Jamaican government also commissioned several of his works as gifts for heads of state. I remember first meeting Pearson a few years ago here in Geneva when the Mission of Jamaica hosted an exhibition of his sculptures. His Nubian sculptures were mesmerizing.
